Malwarebytes built its reputation as the tool you ran after your regular antivirus missed something — a fast, on-demand cleaner rather than a full-time real-time suite. That positioning has shifted: modern Malwarebytes Premium runs full real-time protection, a firewall companion, and browser guard, putting it in direct competition with the suites we test as primary protection rather than a second opinion.
Where it still earns its reputation
Malwarebytes remains genuinely strong at cleanup — removing adware, potentially unwanted programs (PUPs), and browser hijackers that some traditional antivirus engines under-prioritize because they’re more nuisance than outright malicious. If you’ve ever had a browser quietly redirected by a bundled toolbar, this is the category Malwarebytes was built for.
Where it’s not the strongest primary suite
As a full-time real-time suite, it doesn’t yet match the zero-day detection rates we measured from Bitdefender Total Security or Norton 360 Deluxe in our lab, and it doesn’t bundle the VPN, password manager, or identity monitoring that push those suites’ value higher at a similar price.
Our take
Malwarebytes Premium is a reasonable primary suite for a light, low-fuss install, and a genuinely excellent second-opinion scanner alongside any suite on our full rating — including ones you already pay for. It’s a better complement than a replacement for the top-ranked suites this cycle.
